As a nutritional therapist working on women's health and fertility (Eleni) and as an Ayurvedic practitioner (Karin) we see daily women (or couples) who wish to conceive and grow a healthy baby.
So in today's newsletter we would love to give you the insight on how Ayurveda approaches fertility or sub-fertility (we don't like the term infertility) and give you some great tips to boost your chances of conception the Ayurvedic way!
In Ayurveda, the body is said to be composed of seven vital tissues known as Dhatus. These range from the most foundational (Rasa – the fluid part of the body) to the most refined (Sukra – the reproductive tissue).
-
What is Sukra Dhatu? Sukra Dhatu represents the body’s reproductive tissue in both men and women. It’s considered a vital source of vitality, creativity, and the ability to conceive.
-
How is Sukra Dhatu Nourished? Because Sukra Dhatu is formed after all other Dhatus have been nourished, high-quality nutrition and strong digestion are crucial. Eliminating toxins (Ama) while ensuring balanced intake of nourishing foods and herbs helps foster robust Sukra Dhatu.
Reasons for Infertility in Ayurveda
Ayurveda recognizes that fertility challenges can stem from various imbalances:
-
Weak Agni (Digestive Fire): Poor digestion leads to the accumulation of Ama (toxins), hindering proper nourishment of Sukra Dhatu.
-
Imbalanced Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha): Significant imbalances in any of the three doshas can affect reproductive health, hormone function, and overall vitality.
-
Lifestyle Factors: Chronic stress, irregular routines, and lack of proper rest deplete the body’s resources.
-
Incompatible Diet and Routine: Consuming highly processed foods or following habits that clash with your Ayurvedic constitution can compromise overall well-being, including fertility.
Five Ayurvedic Habits to Start Today
If you’re preparing for conception, here are three simple yet impactful Ayurvedic habits to help you begin right away:
1.Warm CCF Tea for Morning Detox
-
Why It Helps: Drinking a cup of Cumin-Coriander-Fennel (CCF) tea first thing in the morning helps stimulate digestion, supports gentle detoxification, and prepares your body to absorb nutrients effectively. Optimal digestion is key to nourishing Sukra Dhatu.
-
How to Do It: Boil one teaspoon of the Vital Ojas CCF Tea blend in a cup of water. Strain and sip slowly. This warming beverage helps kickstart your metabolism, flush out toxins, and maintain balanced digestive fire (Agni).
2. Adopt a Consistent Sleep Schedule
-
Why It Helps: The body repairs and restores itself during sleep. A consistent routine optimizes hormone balance, reduces stress, and enhances overall vitality—factors crucial for healthy fertility.
-
How to Do It: Aim for lights out by 10 p.m. to align with the body’s natural rhythms. Avoid screens and heavy meals close to bedtime. Make your bedroom cool, quiet, and calming to support uninterrupted rest.
3. Incorporate Fertility-Supportive Ghee
-
Why It Helps: Good-quality fats are essential for hormone production and tissue regeneration, including reproductive tissues. Ghee, an Ayurvedic staple, is especially prized for its ability to penetrate deeply into the body’s cells and enhance nutrient absorption.
-
How to Do It:
-
Ultimate Ojas (Ghee with Dates): Eat from the jar, add to your porridge or blend with your favorite milk and spices. This nourishing blend supports sustained energy and helps replenish Dhatus, including Sukra.
-
Cacao Magic Ghee: Stir a spoonful into warm milk, porridge, on your toast or eat a teaspoon straight from the jar. The addition of Shatavari is traditionally known to support fertility and hormonal balance, while cacao and rose are celebrated for their heart-opening and mood-lifting properties.
4. Daily Kitchari Meal for Gentle Cleansing and Nourishment
-
Why It Helps: Kitchari is a classic Ayurvedic dish combining rice, split mung beans, and spices. It is easy on digestion and helps the body eliminate toxins, keeping the gut balanced and nourished. A clean digestive tract means maximum absorption of the nutrients required to build strong Sukra Dhatu.
-
How to Do It: Cook Vital Ojas Kitchari as per the instructions and add your choice of vegetables. Consuming kitchari regularly—such as for lunch or dinner—provides a wholesome, balanced meal that supports overall detoxification and tissue nourishment.
With the above practices you can fast-forward nourish your Sukhra Dhatu and enhance your chances of conception, improved ovum and sperm and a stronger, healthier pregnancy.
