In Ayurveda, ojas is revered as the pure essence of all bodily tissues. Think of ojas as the essence that sustains vitality and immunity within us. Ojas is seen as the quintessence of the constituents of the body (lymph, blood, muscles, fat, bone, spine and bone marrow, and semen). It provides our primal vigor—the basis for physical and mental endurance. It is the essence of digested food, water, air, impressions, and thought. At a deeper level, it is responsible for nourishing the development of all higher faculties. Ojas is also our latent creative potential, a storehouse of creative energy. It brings patience, consistency, and steadiness to the mind and promotes feelings of peace, love, calm, and contentment.What is Ojas?

Ojas also forms the basic material of the five sense organs, ligaments and lubricating fluids. Ojas is described to have the color of ghee, the taste of honey, the smell of fried paddy/rice grain. 

Ojas is also our first line of defense against infection. Ojas has the remarkable ability to counteract the causes of disease, influenced directly by agni, or digestive fire, which determines the quality of assimilation and nutrition.

The Factors Affecting Ojas

Our lifestyle, exposure to stress and trauma, and the quality of our relationships significantly impact the strength of our ojas. Unhealthy or damaged relationships, for example, can weaken our ojas. Thus, supporting and building ojas is a delicate art that involves various aspects of our daily lives.

How to Support and Build Ojas

1. Diet:

Perhaps one of the most effective ways to consistently build ojas is through a diet of fresh, unprocessed whole foods appropriate for the season. Through healthy digestion, tiny amounts of the essence of these foods accumulate over time, transforming into ojas. Ghee, a staple in Ayurvedic cooking, is particularly effective in building ojas and can be easily incorporated into your daily diet.

Ayurveda also honors certain herbs like ashwagandha and shatavari as powerful ojas builders. Traditionally, these herbs were combined with ojas-building foods such as dates, almonds, coconut, saffron, ghee, honey, and cardamom in a milk base. This mixture, warmed and taken before bed, served both as a sleep aid and an ojas builder.

2. Lifestyle:

In addition to diet, certain lifestyle practices are essential for building and maintaining ojas. These include:

  • Healthy Sleeping Habits: Aim to go to bed early and rise early, and avoid excessive sleeping.
