What Your Cravings Are Really Telling You (Ayurveda Knows!)

What Your Cravings Are Really Telling You (Ayurveda Knows!)

Mar 27, 2025

Have you ever wondered why you're suddenly desperate for chocolate at 4 p.m., or why salty snacks call your name late at night? In Ayurveda, cravings aren't random. They're meaningful signals from your body, asking for balance.

Rather than judging or suppressing cravings, we can learn to decode them. Ayurveda teaches us that each craving is linked to the doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and that by understanding the deeper message, we can nourish ourselves in a more aligned, conscious way.

Craving Something Sweet? This is one of the most common cravings, especially in the afternoon or after a meal.

Ayurvedic Insight: A sweet craving often arises from Vata imbalance—think stress, fatigue, anxiety, or irregular routines. Sweet taste is grounding, nourishing, and comforting.

Try This Instead:

Supportive herbs & foods: Ashwagandha, warm milk, oats, ghee, sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.

Craving Salty or Crunchy Snacks? This is often late afternoon or evening, especially when you're overwhelmed or scattered.

Ayurvedic Insight: Salty cravings can point to a Vata or Kapha imbalance. You may be feeling depleted or ungrounded, and salt stimulates both appetite and moisture.

Try This Instead:

  • A small bowl of kitchari with mineral salt

  • Roasted pumpkin seeds with cumin and sea salt

  • A warming bowl of miso broth with ghee

Supportive herbs & foods: Rock salt, seaweed, sesame seeds, mineral-rich teas, warming spices like cumin and ginger.

Craving Spicy or Fried Foods? If you're drawn to chilli, crisps, or heavy, oily takeout, this may be a deeper cry for stimulation or emotional release.

Ayurvedic Insight: These cravings are often linked to a Pitta imbalance—too much heat, intensity, or drive. Spicy foods increase this fire, creating a vicious cycle.

Try This Instead:

  • Cooling cucumber or fennel salad with coconut yogurt

  • CCF tea to reduce heat and support digestion

  • Aloe vera juice or rose petal jam

Supportive herbs & foods: Coriander, mint, fennel, rose, coconut, ghee (yes, again!).

Craving Caffeine or Chocolate? These are classic go-tos when we feel drained, uninspired, or lacking motivation.

Ayurvedic Insight: This often points to a Vata-Pitta imbalance—low energy and depleted nervous system (Vata), or burnout and overdrive (Pitta).

Try This Instead:

  • A nourishing adaptogenic hot cacao with reishi or ashwagandha

  • A midday walk in nature

  • A spoonful of Cacao Magic Ghee for a gentle lift

Supportive herbs & foods: Reishi, shatavari, ashwagandha, tulsi, dates, raw cacao, almond milk.

Honour the Message, Not Just the Craving The next time a craving hits, pause and listen. Ask yourself: What am I really needing? Comfort? Rest? Energy? Calm?

Ayurveda reminds us that true nourishment isn’t about restriction. It’s about rhythm, self-awareness, and real connection to our inner cues.

Let your cravings become doorways to deeper balance—and delicious, aligned nourishment.
