Great! We’re glad you’re here!

We are Eleni and Karin, Founders of Vital Ojas, and we are here to clear up your questions and guide you through the fundamentals of Ayurvedic cleansing. By the end of this, you’ll be able to make informed decisions about when, why, and how to detox using the time-tested wisdom of Ayurveda.

What is Ayurvedic Cleansing?

Ayurvedic cleansing takes a balanced and personalised approach to detoxification. Rather than focusing on deprivation, it emphasises nourishment. Rooted in the ancient holistic practices of India, this type of cleanse helps rid your body of toxins (known as ama) and any excess doshas through a tailored diet and specific cleansing therapies. By participating in this process, you’ll not only rejuvenate your body and mind but also align with your body’s natural healing capacity. Unlike many modern detox methods that can leave you feeling depleted, an Ayurvedic cleanse restores equilibrium.

Where Do Toxins Come From?

In Ayurveda, ama refers to undigested food particles that turn into metabolic waste. These toxins form when your digestive fire (agni) is weak, meaning your body can’t fully digest food. Instead of being transformed into nutrition and energy, undigested food ferments and becomes a sticky, toxic substance that clogs your body’s vital channels. This buildup impairs everything from waste elimination to nutrient transportation and communication between cells, becoming a root cause of disease.

Do You Have a Toxic Build-up?

Your body constantly gives you signals, and if you’re feeling like a cleanse might be necessary, it’s probably time. To identify whether you have an excess of toxins (ama), try tuning in and seeing if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • A thick white coating on your tongue
  • Fatigue or feeling sluggish
  • A sense of heaviness in body and mind
  • Brain fog or lack of clarity
  • Bad breath or a persistent foul taste in the mouth
  • Indigestion, nausea, or fluctuating appetite
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Low libido or lack of energy
  • Aching joints or stiffness
  • Skin issues such as rashes, dryness, or acne
  • Intense cravings for sugar or processed carbs
  • General discomfort or the feeling that “something is off”

Ayurvedic cleansing is designed to remove this toxic buildup, helping you feel lighter, clearer, and more energised. If you're ready to restore balance, nourish your body, and enhance your overall well-being, this is your moment to start an Ayurvedic cleanse.

How Does Ayurvedic Cleansing Work?

Ayurvedic cleansing works by stirring up toxins and excess doshas, moving them toward the digestive tract for elimination. This process often involves a simplified diet (like kitchari, herbal teas) and using oils to lubricate your body’s elimination pathways. This process strengthens Agni, so that body can eliminate toxins and digest food better. The key is to tend to your agni carefully—your body’s internal fire responsible for digestion and transformation. Strong agni ensures proper digestion, nutrition, and toxin elimination. Rest is crucial during this phase, as your body needs a gentle space to carry out its cleansing duties.

When is the Best Time to Cleanse?

According to Ayurveda, the ideal times to detox are during the transitional seasons- Spring and Fall. These are the moments when nature shifts, and so should our internal systems. In the Fall, the focus is on cleansing excess pitta (fire element), while in Spring, we aim to re-ignite the digestive fire after winter’s build-up of kapha (earth element). Aligning your cleanse with these seasonal changes ensures you support your body’s natural rhythms and maintain balance.

Phases of an Ayurvedic Cleanse

An Ayurvedic cleanse generally follows three key phases, all essential for success:

  1. Preparation: During this phase, you’ll simplify your diet by removing processed foods and gathering any supplies you’ll need. This prepares your body for detoxification without shocking your system.

  2. Cleansing: In this phase, you'll adhere to a simplified meal plan and incorporate specific detox therapies. Rest is vital during this time, allowing your body the space it needs to eliminate toxins and rejuvenate.

  3. Reintegration: After the cleanse, you’ll slowly reintroduce more variety into your diet, starting with easily digestible foods. During this phase, focus on maintaining balance and gradually reintroducing aspects of your life that support your well-being.

What cleanse is best for me?

For those looking for a gentle cleanse, a kitchari cleanse is an excellent option. This approach is very manageable for modern lifestyles, focusing on a simple diet while incorporating body care rituals. Participating a simple 5 day kitchari cleanse will leave you feeling revitalised and ready to tackle life with renewed energy and resilience.
